FIVE THINGS TO CHECK BEFORE CHOOSING A REHABILITATION OR SKILLED NURSING FACILITY When a parent is discharged from the hospital, families are often handed a list of facilities and expected to make an important decision very quickly. Before choosing, look beyond the lobby, brochure and online photos. 1. STAFFING AND RESPONSE TIMES Ask how many nurses and certified nursing assistants are working during the day, overnight and on weekends. How quickly are call buttons answered? Will your parent regularly see the same caregivers? 2. INSPECTION HISTORY AND QUALITY RATINGS Review the facility on Medicare Care Compare. Look at recent inspections, staffing information, penalties and reported deficiencies. Ask the facility what it has done to correct any serious problems. 3. THE RIGHT REHABILITATION SERVICES Confirm that the facility regularly works with your parent’s specific condition. Ask how often physical, occupational or speech therapy will be provided and what happens if your parent misses a session. 4. DISCHARGE PLANNING Rehabilitation is only one part of the transition. Ask who will prepare the family for the return home, arrange equipment, coordinate follow-up care and explain what assistance may be needed afterward. 5. COVERAGE AND OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS Do not assume Medicare or insurance will pay for everything. Ask what is covered, what conditions must be met, when coverage could end and what the daily private-pay cost would be. Most importantly, visit when possible. Pay attention to how staff members speak to residents, whether residents appear clean and comfortable and whether the building feels calm, respectful and well managed. A beautiful building does not always equal excellent care. The right senior living guidance professional can help families compare their options, ask better questions and make a more informed decision during a stressful time. Seniornicity connects seniors and families with trusted, senior-focused professionals who understand that choosing care is not simply about finding an available bed.
