Since December 2011, Silverton resident John Hughes has run ComForCare Home Care of Salem, providing home care services that include personal care, meal preparation, light housekeeping, dementia care and more to area seniors & disabled individuals. Before owning this ComForCare Home Care location, I worked for 23+ years as a software developer in the hi-tech industry. Facing an impending layoff, the second in three years, I realized I no longer enjoyed my career, and I decided to switch gears and do something completely different. I literally had the thought driving home one evening, ‘what am I going to do when I grow up’? I realized I was one of the ‘old dogs’ now and what I once loved doing had become “just a job”. I decided to do something different that would help people, and I would find it fulfilling. I grew up in a rural area in Oregon watching my mother volunteer for 25+ years with the elderly and disabled which inspired me to do the same. Aided by a franchise consultant, I decided to open my own home care office. When parents face health or mobility challenges, it’s a very emotional time for their children, who are trying to raise their own families, work, and take care of their parents. Our team has great compassion for their situation, as we have been in their shoes ourselves. The work is rewarding, especially when we meet with families and see the look of relief on their faces when we talk to them about how we can help them. Our services benefit the client as well as the whole family unit. From the feedback we get from clients and their families, we know we are making a difference in their lives. That ensures that we can go to bed every night with a smile on our faces. Our caregivers are part of a company with heart, so we expect them to bring their hearts to their clients every day to help them “live their best life possible”.
